Meet the Makers : Skyworks Aerial Systems

You might remember Skyworks from last year’s Maker Faire where Greg Friesmuth was showing off one of his drone projects. Since then, they have grown into a full fledged company producing custom drones for education, research and business. Stop by their booth and say hi to Greg, Ginger and Rakitha who can tell you everything you want to know about drones.  Official marketing spiel below. :)

Skyworks Aerial Systems (“SkyworksAS”) is a hardware company that designs, manufactures, and sells small and adaptable unmanned aerial systems (UAS). SkyworksAS is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada founded by two mechanical engineering students from UNLV. SkyworksAS is capable of delivering a variety of solutions to both civil and commercial entities that are interested in integrating UAS in their business operations, as well as facilitating educational, research and development needs for the UAS industry.

SkyworksAS multi-rotor copter families are small and versatile. They are designed to adapt to numerous applications including indoor, underground, and/or hazardous flights. A proprietary frame design gives the SkyworksAS platform an advantage of modularity in the vehicle families, scalability in payload capacity, and optimization in the manufacturing process.

Meet the Makers : Las Vegas Swings

Tom McGrady has been making quality handmade porch swings, garden arbors and Adirondack chairs in Las Vegas since 2003. A true craftsman, each chair he produces is made to order and is signed by the artist. He is proud of his workshop and will be happy to give you a tour if you ask!

Stop by his booth at Las Vegas Mini Maker Faire and he might just share some of his woodworking techniques with you if you ask nicely.

Check back tomorrow to meet another maker!

Meet the Makers : Robot Army

Sarah is an artist with megalomaniacal desires to control a vast robot army with her mind. Mark is an electronics genius and closet Brony. They met one day at a SYN Shop meetup and became fast friends united by their common interests in delta robots.  With Mark’s 3D printing and electronics know-how and Sarah’s vision and design flair, they were soon plotting a kickstarter to bring a robot army to life.

There will be several networked robots at Maker Faire Vegas for people interact with and control, the initial deployment of the several hundred robot strong art project they are planning, dubbed Light Play. They are currently rushing to produce robots to fulfill their successful kickstarter order and to present at San Mateo Maker Faire in May – but you can see them in Las Vegas first!

Check back tomorrow to meet a new maker!

Meet the Makers: Avondale Shirt Co

If you’ve been a fan of vintage since before it was cool and love a little touch of the unique in your ensemble, we’d like you to meet the Avondale Shirt Co.

Inspired by old-time family photos and a love of genealogy, Stephanie LaBorde Pierotti @stephlab99 formed the company here in Las Vegas to explore her passion for the eras past and bring her unique voice to women’s fashion. In addition to supporting the local community by manufacturing in Las Vegas, $1 from the sale of every item will be donated to a selected charity.

Vintage-inspired patterns, playful prints and recycled fabrics join together in their adorable lines:

Retro novelty print women’s pajamas, named after prohibition-era cocktails.

Sacre Bleu!
19th century woodcut art on premium knits. Designed & printed in Las Vegas.

Vintage-inspired women’s blouses named after designer’s ancestors.

Daisy Belle
